The Route In

Step 1: Are we right for each other?

An initial meeting will allow us to work with you to identify the right path and is an opportunity to be open and honest about your expectations and the possible roles that may be suitable for you.

Step 2: Finding a role

There are a number of ways service leavers and veterans can apply for roles within Barclays:

For all current job vacancies across Barclays Group, please visit our Careers page or download our jobs app. When applying for any role please email the AFTER Team and include the job title and your requisition number.

Selected opportunities

The following selected opportunities are specifically geared towards ex-military and should be applied for directly through the AFTER Team. To apply, please email your CV and covering letter to the AFTER team by the closing date shown on each role profile.

Before you apply:

Think about what you want to achieve from your new career.

Develop existing skills? Acquire new technical skills? Leadership and team management? Travel opportunities or fixed location?

Bear in mind, corporate careers can be less structured than the military. However, Barclays values itself as a meritocracy and will support you in taking your career in the direction you want.

Step 3: The interview process

Barclays conducts biographical and capability interviews which are tailored to the role for which you are applying.

The biographical interview is a run through of your CV and life choices to date in an effort to find out about you as a person; what drives you and why you made the career choices that you have made so far.

The capability interviews cover topics including (but not exhaustive) commercial skills, technical skills (role specific), leadership and management, decision-making, service excellence and planning.

The key to success is identifying the transferable skills you have built thus far and ensuring you can articulate why you are applying for that specific role. For more information and advice, or dates for our CV and Interview workshops please email the AFTER team.

Step 4: Your career

Barclays is focused on helping people to achieve their ambitions, and the AFTER programme is a great example of this. Through AFTER, ex-military personnel can benefit from a range of support in their transition to civilian employment. The programme provides work placements, direct employment opportunities, CV and interview coaching, and money management sessions, as well as funding for education and vocational courses for Service Leavers through charity partners.

As a successful candidate, Barclays and the AFTER Programme will create a development plan with you to help you progress in your career. You own it and we will help you achieve your goals.

The Barclays Military Network is active across the business and supports veterans as they settle into their new career.

Ex-military employees in Barclays are recruited from all Services and across the ranks.

Upcoming events

Barclays Military Talent Day (MTD) - 22 October 2018

These take place two times a year in either London or Glasgow. The MTD consists of a series of presentations about Barclays, given by senior leaders, highlighting the transferable skills that Service personnel have and how they fit into financial services. The final presentation outlines live roles that are available to Service Leavers and veterans and how to go about applying. The day concludes with an informal networking event, where delegates have the opportunity to talk to members of the Barclays Military Services Network and ask any questions about the transition from the military into financial services. Service Leavers and veterans with an interest in a career in financial services are greatly encouraged to attend a MTD. The next MTDs are scheduled to take place in 22 October 2018 and you can register via CTP or directly through the AFTER team.

CV and interview workshops

These are bespoke one or two day workshops tailored to the needs of the individual.

They are hosted at regular intervals – for more information about upcoming workshops and to register, please email the AFTER team.

Barclays Military Internship Programme

The internship commences on 3 September 2018 and runs for 12 weeks until 23 November 2018 (there is some flexibility in the duration, recognising that each individual’s resettlement period is unique). The internship is open to any Service Leaver able to complete the placement whilst in the period of their Resettlement.  As the placements are for those still in Service, they are unpaid and all costs are to be incurred as part of the individual’s Resettlement process.

  • The internships are within the Investment Bank, Barclaycard and Internal Audit and based in London (Canary Wharf), Radbroke, Manchester & Glasgow.
  • Placements are available across a wide range of functions and include Risk Management, Change Management (Project Management, PMO), Financial Crime, Operations and Technology.
  • Depending on past experience, transferable skills and applicant’s interests, an appropriate placement will be allocated (this will be discussed and agreed during the application and interview stages).
  • We invest in the development of our colleagues to make sure we have the most dedicated and driven people in the market. This opportunity could be a stepping stone to a future career.

Sponsored by the Barclays Executive Leadership team, the internship has senior level support.

Applications to be made via CTP using RightJob reference N178938.
