West Midlands

The West Midlands is one of nine official regions of England. It covers the western half of the area traditionally known as the Midlands. It contains the second most populous British city, Birmingham and the larger West Midlands conurbation, which includes the city of Wolverhampton and large towns of Dudley, Solihull, Walsall and West Bromwich. The city of Coventry is also located within the West Midlands county, but is separated from the conurbation to the west by several miles of green belt.

Stoke and the Premier League

The Premier League generates over £300bn per year and provides enormous opportunities for small businesses to capitalise on. On a local level in Staffordshire during the 2015-16 season, Stoke City Football Club (Stoke City FC) contributed an impressive £132m to the local economy.

Since Stoke City FC were promoted to the Premier League’s top flight in 2007/08, subsequent seasons have seen the Club achieve significant success both on and off the field. As their banking partner, we’ve seen how their increased revenue has helped them fund major investments in the stadium, training facilities and annual revenues which are more than ten times that achieved in its last season in the Championship.

Local companies like our Barclays client Reynolds and Litchfield, a steelworks business, have benefited from upgrades and new revenue streams like these.

These acquisitions enabled Barclays to become one of the ‘Big Five’ clearing banks, with national coverage.
