Chief Operating Officer

Paul Compton joined Barclays as Chief Operating Officer in May 2016.

In his role as Chief Operating Officer, Paul is responsible for leading the global operations, technology functions and corporate real estate services, driving the implementation of the structural reform and cost transformation programmes, and for the delivery of other major Bank-wide projects. Paul is leading the enhancement of Barclays’ operating structures to drive efficiency within the firm, building on the progress of the business to date and delivering the performance that Barclays shareholders expect.

In addition to his responsibilities of Chief Operating Officer, Paul was appointed on 1 September 2017 as Chief Executive Officer of the Group Service Company. Paul will lead the newly created Group Service Company in becoming a world-class provider of simple, efficient, innovative and secure operation and technology services to Barclays Group and its two operating divisions, Barclays UK and Barclays International. The creation of the Group Service Company is a major step in the execution of Barclays’ strategy and in the delivery of our Structural Reform Programme. It will give us a competitive edge while positioning Barclays at the forefront of industry change and innovation.

Prior to joining Barclays, Paul has served for nearly two decades in a variety of senior operating roles at JPMorgan Chase. His most recent role at JPMorgan was Chief Administrative Officer and before being appointed in this role in 2013, Paul served as Co-Chief Administrative Officer for the Corporate & Investment Bank, Deputy Head of Operations, and head of the JPMorgan Chase Global Service Centre in India.

Paul started his career at JPMorgan in 1997, and first led the overhaul of the wholesale bank’s credit risk infrastructure, before taking on the role as Chief Financial Officer for the Investment Bank.

Previous to JPMorgan, Paul spent 10 years as Principal at Ernst & Young in the Brisbane and New York offices.

Paul holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland, Australia. He received post-graduate degrees from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the Securities Institute of Australia.
