At Barclaycard, our innovations are all about helping people. So for the past few years we’ve partnered up with the Royal British Legion to help them reach their fundraising targets on London Poppy Day.
By providing card terminals for Londoners to donate, we were able to help the Royal British Legion achieve their £1m target. Commuters or busy travellers who didn’t have cash on them were able to give charitably using their credit or debit card via contactless or Chip & PIN. To make this happen, 130 Barclaycard volunteers teamed up with military personnel to set up card terminals at stations around the capital resulting in contactless terminals donations increasing by 83% from 2014.
In addition to commitment of technology and employee volunteers, we also waived all the normal fees and charges associated with terminal transactions, meaning that 100% of the funds raised went directly to the London Poppy Day Appeal.
By enabling touch and go donations, our team of Barclaycard volunteers raised just over £65,000 between them in a single day. These contributions will go towards care, advice and support for both retired and currently serving military personnel and their families.
Our support for the armed forces goes well beyond our contribution to London Poppy Day. Barclaycard is closely involved in the Barclays AFTER (Armed Forces Transition Employment and Resettlement) programme to help military personnel transition into civilian life after being discharged. We’ve hired hundreds of servicemen and women through this program and we are committed to opening up opportunities for many more ex-armed forces personnel in the future.
