Selection process

To work out whether Barclays is the place for you, we assess both your competencies (what you do) and your values (how you do it). While the competencies are unique to each role, we need all colleagues to share our approach, which is based on our values.

While the application process depends on the role, there are some constants.

You'll need to start with an online application form, and we'll ask about your contact details, education and work experience. You'ill also need to upload a CV, so it’s a good idea to have this ready.

If your application is successful you'll be invited to complete a number of online assessments or take part in a telephone interview.

Our online assessments are carefully designed to measure the skills and capabilities you'll need to be successful in our roles, and they'll also give you an idea of what our roles involve. They usually take about an hour and you’ll always have the opportunity to practice first.

Our telephone interviews give us the opportunity to find out more about your experience and technical skills, and give you the chance to ask us questions. They usually last about half an hour.

If your telephone interview or online assessment is successful, we’ll invite you to a face-to-face interview. We want you to be free to choose an interview time that suits you, so we’ll give you some options and ask you to choose one of them online.

At your interview, we’ll be keen to explore your motivation for the role, your fit with our values and the key skills and behaviours (competencies) you need for the role.

You can demonstrate core competencies by giving us examples of when, why and how you have used these skills in the past. This tells us that you have the potential to apply these skills if you work with us.

Interviews for some roles might involve additional assessments - for example, role plays, case studies and presentations. We’ll only assess skills that are relevant to the role, and we'll give you a full brief beforehand that will tell you what’s going to happen.

To help us to move your application forward quickly, bring supporting documents to your interview. You'll need your passport (which confirms you can work in the UK) and driving licence or bank statements (which verify your current address).

If you’ve been successful at interview, we’ll ask for some additional information so that you can complete our screening process. We’ll tell you more about the screening process during the application process, as the way it works depends on your location.

Tips & advice

  • We want to work with people who can:

    • Surpass customer and client expectations, producing sustainable results
    • Work collaboratively with people from all backgrounds and prioritise shared interests
    • Act fairly, ethically and openly
    • Innovate and help us create the future of banking

We’d like to hear from both people with a wide range of experience and people starting out on their careers.

    Competencies

Below you’ll find descriptions of the competencies which form our Selection and Assessment Framework for each level within our internal hierarchy. These are underpinned by the Barclays Capabilities, which describe the skills our colleagues need to help us build the bank of the future.

  • We've created a selection process that is designed to assess candidates in a robust, consistent and transparent way. The steps you’ll go through depend on the job you’re applying for. Most candidates will need to go through a number of stages that assess both competencies and values, online and in person.

  • You’ll find it useful to take a look at the following before applying to Barclays:

  • We use competency-based interviews, letting you demonstrate your skills by giving your interviewer examples of how you've used them before. Sometimes we also use assessments based on exercises such as role plays and presentations. We'll explain your assessment process before you start.

If you haven’t applied for a job before, Barclays Lifeskills tells you about writing your CV and preparing for an interview.

    Preparing your CV

    • Your CV needs to tell us what you know, what you’ve done before and what you can do for us.
    • Make sure it’s up to date and tailored to the role. Show us why your skills make you suitable for the job.
    • You don’t need to include a personal statement – but if you do, make sure it enhances the rest of your CV. Avoid statements about behavioural traits (‘great communicator’), since hiring managers ignore them.
    • Explain any long gaps between roles.
    • Put your CV in chronological order. Give the job title, company and dates you worked there, then describe your role. Emphasise the information most relevant to the job you want, but avoid too much detail.
    • Explain how your hobbies demonstrate your skills. For example, coaching a sports team could show leadership.
    • Check spelling and grammar. Show it to a friend or colleague, as they might be able to point out something you’ve missed!
