Our roles

When people think of banks, they usually think of branches, investment banking and board rooms. But online banking, complex international transactions and security require complex technology - and that's why technology is a driving force at Barclays.

We have a history of groundbreaking innovation. We want to lead technological change in financial services, not follow others: we were the first high street bank to offer an ATM, the first bank in Africa to launch an Apple Watch app and one of the first banks to launch wearable payment devices.

Pingit was the first UK app to allow payments by mobile phone, using just a phone number. Our technology teams keep Pingit up to date. They collaborate using Agile methods to add new features and incorporate customer feedback.

Assisted Service Counters

We've simplified and automated routine banking transactions for our customers, saving them time while keeping their personal contact with branch staff.

Apple Watch app

We were the first bank in Africa to launch an Apple Watch app - and using Agile methodology meant we did it in just six weeks!

Barclays Live

Barclays Live keeps our colleagues and clients connected, offering everything from small-scale web apps and research content to analytic tools based on enterprise-level technology.

bPay is one of the world's first open-loop contactless payment devices, allowing people from the age of 12 to use wearables to pay quickly and easily from a pre-paid account.

Barclays.Net is a customisable online banking site for corporate clients. It's secure and efficient, saving time as well as offering full transparency.

The CoLabs (Collaboration Laboratories) at some of our technology locations let colleagues experiment, design and make technology changes rapidly. Our technology teams work alongside fintech entrepreneurs through our global partnership with RISE in New York, London and Cape Town, bringing us new ideas and a start-up mindset.

Diversity and community in technology

The team that creates our technology needs to be as diverse as the customers who use it. Our community initiatives promote careers in technology for young people, and have won awards.

Our IT Girls Allowed programme aims to inspire young people with stories about women in technology, such as Ada Lovelace and the female operators at Bletchley Park during World War Two. Our Women in Technology group leads initiatives to attract and retain female talent for our technology teams, and Barclays offers employee networks for all aspects of diversity, including ethnicity and sexual orientation.

Colleagues are also involved with lots of other technology-related events, such as CoderDojo coding clubs for children.
