Diversity and inclusion

Diverse organisations perform better: they understand their customers' needs better, they make better decisions and they are better places to work.

Barclays is committed to equality. We strive to achieve this through a variety of initiatives – for example, campaigns to increase the number of female leaders and sponsoring Pride. We also support internal networks such as Spectrum (LGBT), Women's Initiative Network and Reach (disabilities).

Diversity is critical to our success. We recognise that our colleagues have many roles in addition to their work at Barclays, so our flexible working options support their commitments outside their professional lives. We offer a range of employee benefits to meet individual needs.

Skills and competencies

Each level of our internal hierarchy has a selection and assessment method that is based on our competency framework.  This is underpinned by Barclays Capabilities, which describe the skills our colleagues need to help us build tomorrow's bank.

Benefits and opportunities

  • Barclays offers a rewards package you can tailor to your own needs. Start with a competitive salary, pension/retirement fund and discretionary annual bonus, then add benefits such as private healthcare, share plans, a childcare voucher scheme and many other options.

As a Barclays colleague, you can look forward to plenty of challenges and opportunities, and the chance to develop both professionally and personally. We have an active internal jobs market and offer our vacancies to colleagues before we look to the external market.

  • Your wellbeing is important to Barclays, so we offer a range of health and wellbeing benefits. The range available depends on where you’re based. For example, many Barclays colleagues get discounted rates at gyms and health clubs, health screening, private health insurance and employee assistance programmes.

  • As a Barclays colleague, you can enjoy discounts on a wide range of products and services, from theatre tickets to cars. In some locations, colleagues can also get access to Barclays products and services on preferential terms.

  • We offer a competitive holiday allowance, depending on where you work and how long you’ve been working for Barclays.

  • As a Barclays colleague, you can share in the company's success by buying shares, and we’ll give you up to £600 worth of matching shares. In the UK, our Sharesave plan means colleagues can buy Barclays shares at up to 20% discount at the end of a three to five-year savings period.

  • Our dynamic working programme has been set up to help Barclays colleagues achieve an optimal work/life balance. Arrangements we offer range from working at home and changing regular hours to taking career breaks.

Our Dynamic Working initiatives support colleagues at all stages of their lives, helping them with parenthood, caring, further studies and hobbies.

  • We actively encourage Barclays colleagues to give their time, money and skills to work that brings positive social and business results, so we support their volunteering and fundraising efforts.

As a Barclays colleague, you could support our shared goal to help people develop the vital enterprise, employability and financial skills they need to help them achieve their ambitions, or help with other causes that are important to you.

In 2014, 65,000 colleagues - almost half of our global workforce - used our support to get involved in their community. They volunteered 422,000 hours and raised over £32m.

  • We give Barclays colleagues plenty of opportunities to learn and move your career forward.

If you’re just starting out, we can offer you a structured career progression plan, job rotations and international work placements. You can choose to get involved in internships, graduate schemes and MBA programmes. For those with more experience, there are opportunities to work on international assignments and secondments as well as gaining professional qualifications.

  • We have a number of programmes that recognise colleagues for their commitment and success, acknowledging their involvement in local communities as well as their work at Barclays.

  • Citizenship is an important part of the way we do business. We play a broader role in society, using our business expertise and the skills of our colleagues.

We contribute to social change and economic growth. We’ve developed innovative products and services that serve our community – for example, the first Women in Leadership Index in our industry and the first way for British Sign Language users to contact a bank without visiting a branch.

We’ve also created thousands of employment opportunities through our apprenticeship schemes and our programme for ex-military personnel, as well as helping millions of young people build the enterprise, employability and financial skills they need to achieve their ambitions.

Our people have volunteered hundreds of thousands of hours and raised millions for causes they care about. These successes were built on thousands of individual achievements and the hard work, vision and dedication of our colleagues.

We’re excited to be taking the next steps in our citizenship journey. Read more about our colleagues’ citizenship achievements.

  • We support job-sharing arrangements where possible. A job-sharing arrangement usually involves employing two people part time to cover one full-time role. It's suitable for a wide variety of people and particularly appeals to those who need to balance their working lives and personal circumstances, such as parents and carers.
