The partnership seeks to combine Barclays business and financial expertise with UNICEF’s experience and reach, to provide young people with the support and skills they need to achieve a brighter economic future for themselves and their families.
Over three years, Building young futures will carry out projects in countries including Egypt, the Philippines, Kenya, Russia, Pakistan and Mexico, each designed to meet specific challenges faced in different parts of the world. For example, in the Philippines projects will help establish co-operatives and training opportunities for families in disadvantaged communities.
And in Pakistan, where poverty often forces children into work, we’re launching education centres to provide young people with basic literacy training, mentoring and access to micro-credit, enabling them to gain financial independence and prevent exploitation.
As well as investing £5 million, Barclays will provide business and financial expertise throughout the three-year project and up to 15,000 hours of volunteering time from colleagues.
