Absa, majority-owned by Barclays, has been named Top Retail Banking Brand by South Africa ’s Sunday Times newspaper.
The accolade reflects a survey in which consumers in the country selected their favourite brands in categories such as retail banking, air travel and fashion.
Absa beat First National Bank, Standard Bank and Nedbank to claim the top spot in the Retail Banking category.
Absa Insurance was also placed second in the Consumer Short-term Insurance category, ahead of insurance company Outsurance.
The accolades were presented at the Sunday Times Top Brands Awards in Johannesburg.
Happy Ntshingila, Chief Marketing and Communication Officer at Absa, said: “We have always been proud of accolades received, but we’re especially proud of this success in a tough economic period in which marketing expenditure was curtailed.
“Our brand is built by every single employee, at every touch point, and with every experience.
“It’s the joint effort of the 35,000-strong Absa team that makes winning these awards possible.”
Absa was also named the top brand in retail banking in the ICON Brand and Target Group Index Surveys conducted by Afrikaans newspaper Rapport.
