Without volunteers, groups pushing to get people involved, and not-for-profit organisations helping deliver access to sport for millions of people across the country, sport would not be such a force for good and a major part of our country’s culture.

The accolade recognises the outstanding contribution of individuals and groups to community sport and celebrates the work of the Barclays Spaces for Sports community investment programme across the UK.

It will complement the Barclays Player and Manager of the Month Awards presented to the best performers in the Barclays Premier League throughout the season.

Through the award, those working in community sport can also receive recognition for their achievements in the same way as players and managers at the top of professional football.

Each monthly winner will receive £1,000 for their group or organisation, a limited edition trophy, and be entered into the end of season award to win a further £5,000.

The end of season award winner will also receive a trip to London to receive their award from Gareth Southgate.

The Barclays Community Sports Award is a joint initiative between Barclays Spaces for Sports, the Premier League’s Creating Chances community football programme, and UK sports charity the Football Foundation.

Gareth Southgate, who will also head the judging panel for the award, said: “Sport is much bigger than the top-end of professional games and is a fundamental part of communities in every part of the UK.

“Without volunteers, groups pushing to get people involved, and not-for-profit organisations helping deliver access to sport for millions of people across the country, sport would not be such a force for good and a major part of our country’s culture.

“I am therefore delighted to be involved in the Barclays Community Sports Award and look forward to celebrating the great work taking place in our communities throughout the UK.”

Colleagues, as well as members of the public, can nominate a person, group or not-for-profit organisation for the Barclays Community Sports Award by visiting the link on the right hand side of this page.

Barclays Spaces for Sports, launched in the UK in 2004, is a community sports programme using sport to revitalise disadvantaged communities and tackle key social issues in countries around the world where Barclays operates.
