The sponsorship aims to help people travel around the UK capital more easily and lead healthier lives.

A record 24,442 journeys were made on Tuesday as a result of the London Underground strikes, up 32 per cent on the average number of journeys made each day in the previous week.

In addition to the 500,000 journeys now made, more than 80,000 people have signed up as members.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “We’ve seen the streets of central London transformed, as our bikes become a familiar and immensely popular sight on London’s streets.”

Barclays Cycle Hire was launched to members six weeks ago on 30 July by Barclays Group Chairman Marcus Agius and the Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

When completed, the scheme will see 6,000 cycles and 400 docking points made available across central London.
