Barclays Cycle Hire, an initiative which provides an affordable, sustainable and environmentally friendly transport network in central London, has announced details of its expansion.
From Thursday, 8 March, bikes will be available beyond central London to include North Shoreditch, Camden Town, Westfield Stratford and all of the Borough of Tower Hamlets, including Canary Wharf.
Londoners and visitors to the city can make use of an additional 2,000 bikes and 4,200 docking points installed across the existing and new Barclays Cycle Hire area.
Ashok Vaswani, CEO, Barclays UK Retail and Business Banking, said: “Barclays Cycle Hire has undoubtedly been a huge success and the extension to east London will mean even more people will benefit from this bold and pioneering initiative.
“This scheme is a demonstrable example of our commitment to the communities in which we serve.”
The expanded Barclays Cycle Hire scheme will cover 65 square kilometres of the UK capital. In total, 8,000 bikes will be available from over 14,400 docking points in locations across central and east London.
To date, nearly 10 million journeys have been made on the bikes, with more than 150,000 people signing up as members of the scheme.
