Her Majesty the Queen will be joined by Chairman Marcus Agius and Chief Executive Bob Diamond as she opens the exhibition, entitled ‘Royal River: Power, Pageantry and the Thames’.
‘Royal River’, guest-curated by historian and television presenter David Starkey, has been organised to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The exhibition highlights the enduring relationship between Britain’s royal families and one of the world’s most famous rivers.
It presents the historic River Thames through the ages and its transformation after the notorious ‘Great Stink’.
The exhibition comprises nearly 400 objects, including 50 from Her Majesty the Queen’s Royal Collection and over 250 items on loan from museums, galleries and private collections across Europe and North America, many of which have never previously been on public display.
Marcus Agius said: “I am delighted Barclays is sponsoring Royal River: Power, Pageantry and the Thames at the National Maritime Museum.
“‘Royal River’ is a fitting way for the National Maritime Museum to celebrate its 75th anniversary and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.
“Barclays is committed to supporting the communities we serve. Sponsorship of ‘Royal River’ enables us to partner with a treasured arts organisation, and help enhance the experience of thousands of visitors.”
The exhibition will be open to the public every day between 10:00 and 17:00 from this Friday, 27 March, until 9 September 2012.
