The interview comes before tonight’s match, which sees van der Sar’s former team take on local rivals Manchester City. The game is likely to decide where the title goes this season, and Manchester United’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson has called it the most important derby match of his career.
In the video interview, published on the Barclays Football Facebook page, van der Sar offers his views on this season’s title race.
The Dutchman, who has won the Barclays Premier League four times with Manchester United, said: “It’s a huge game in the Barclays Premier League, and everyone knows my heart is red so I'm hoping for a win or a draw at least.”
Van der Sar, rated one of the best goalkeepers of all time, continued: “Obviously Man United have been in this situation many times before, and as Fergie says, ‘We don't like to make it easy for ourselves!’ So hopefully they can use that experience to win the title once again.”
Manchester United are currently leading by three points.
If Manchester City win tonight at their home stadium, they will go top of the table due to their better goal difference, currently six above their local rivals. There will then be only two games left, and City will be favourites to win the Barclays Premier League.
