This is the fourth time that Barclays has sponsored the event, after tournaments in Hong Kong in 2007, Beijing in 2009 and Hong Kong again in 2011 when Chelsea lifted the trophy.
“Hong Kong is becoming a second home for the Barclays Premier League and we wish all the teams every success,” said Robert Morrice, Chairman and Chief Executive, Asia Pacific. “Hong Kong has become popular as a venue as the city embraces the competition and makes it such a success.”
The first round of matches see Tottenham play Sunderland and Manchester City take on South China in tonight’s games. The winners play each other for the Barclays Asia Trophy on Saturday evening, while the losers of tonight’s games will compete in the third and fourth team play-off.
Saturday’s final is sold out with over 40,000 fans expected, including clients, customers and employees.
“There is a lot of excitement in Hong Kong at the moment. From the person on the street, to our clients and employees, they all love football and the Barclays Premier League. We know that Hong Kong Stadium will be full of passionate fans,” added Robert.
The tournament is the only officially sanctioned Premier League tournament outside the UK and is a key part of pre-season games for the three English teams. The Barclays Premier League season will start again on 17 August, which will also be the first year of Barclays’ renewed three-year term as title sponsor.
