After a week of rain in Hong Kong, the fans were delighted to see the players from Tottenham and South China, and then those of Manchester City and Sunderland take to the pitch on Saturday night for a double header of football.

Robert Morrice, Chairman and CEO, Asia Pacific, who presented the trophy to winners, said: “Despite the weather conditions it has been a fantastic week of football in Hong Kong, and a great platform to showcase the Barclays Premier League in Asia. Our congratulations go to Manchester City for winning the tournament.

“It’s not just been about the on-the-pitch activity,” he said. “From the moment the players were welcomed at the airport by excited local fans, through to our ambassador David Ginola meeting clients and employees, it has been a real advert for all the good things in football. It’s been a privilege to host the tournament once again in Hong Kong.”

In the third and fourth team play-off Tottenham beat local champions South China.

During a week-long schedule of activity, the teams and David Ginola met with clients, took part in open training sessions and press conferences, and visited Barclays-supported community investment projects. A highlight of the week was when David awarded certificates to the first 40 graduates of Barclays Spaces for Sports programme in Hong Kong.

The Barclays Premier League trophy was also a popular attraction when it was taken to clients’ offices and local community projects, as well as Barclays’ office where over 300 employees had their photograph taken alongside the trophy and David Ginola.

The Barclays Asia Trophy tournament is the only officially sanctioned Premier League tournament outside of the UK, and is a key part of pre-season games for the three English teams. The Barclays Premier League season will start again on 17 August, which will also be the first year of Barclays’ renewed three-year term as title sponsor.
