The Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) recognise best practice in responsible business. These accolades highlight the progress Barclays has made in its Citizenship activities – how the business is working to take a long-term approach to decision-making and develop products and services that benefit society.
Dow Jones Sustainability Index
This index tracks the economic, environmental and social performance of leading companies and serves as a benchmark for investors who integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios. Barclays maintained its membership of the ‘World Index’ and achieved a score of 82 - well above the industry average of 58.
This investor-backed initiative assesses how the world’s largest companies are minimising their carbon footprint, while capitalising on commercial opportunities and managing risks related to climate change. Barclays achieved the highest ranking attainable (A) and featured in the Performance Leadership Index.
Examples of Barclays activities that led to this achievement include:
- A commitment in our 2015 Citizenship Plan to reduce carbon emissions by 10% (from 2012 levels)
- Funding carbon offset projects that deliver economic and social benefits
- Supporting transactions in the renewable energy and clean technology sectors totalling £2.4bn in 2013.
