Often it's when you think about how to meet specific needs that you find solutions that help the widest range of people and customers, which is why we want to thread this thinking through every business decisions we take.

Barclays has been named best service provider and overall winner of the Disability Standard 2013 which scores UK organisations’ performance on disability across the whole business from their products and services to recruitment and facilities.

Barclays were praised for demonstrating their commitment to getting it right for both their employees and customers.

It’s the first bank to commit to accessible ATMs for blind and visually impaired customers. Building on this innovation all branches are supplied with iPads so customer facing staff can immediately access information via an app - developed by Barclays - which explains how best to help disabled customers.

Deaf customers that turn up without making an appointment can access their banking services immediately via live interpreting services or remote captioning. They no longer have to wait two or three weeks.

Barclays have also consistently worked to attract disabled employees across their business, rather than just one area. They have an armed forces transition programme; an initiative targeting those on the autistic spectrum; and mainstream graduate level recruitment and apprenticeship programmes which specifically target disabled candidates.

Ashok Vaswani, Chief Executive of Barclays Retail and Business Banking, said: "We are delighted to have achieved this standard because getting it right for our employees and customers is so important.

"Often it's when you think about how to meet specific needs that you find solutions that help the widest range of people and customers, which is why we want to thread this thinking through every business decisions we take."
