Barclays Asia Trophy 2015 hailed as ‘best ever’

Parsys 2

Singapore saw the largest ever attendance at a Barclays Asia Trophy football tournament at the finals on Saturday.

There were 52,100 fans in the National Stadium on Saturday night to witness Arsenal take the trophy, making it the biggest single match day attendance in the history of the tournament. The largest crowd previously was 49,700 in Bangkok, Thailand in 2005.

The Barclays Asia Trophy in Singapore also set the largest attendance over two match days as 82,000 came to watch, beating Hong Kong’s attendance of 76,300 in 2007. Fans from Singapore and across the region came to enjoy Arsenal, Everton, Stoke City and a Singapore Select XI battle it out.

It kicked off with Barclays Singapore Country Head Li Li Kuan giving the opening address at the tournament welcome reception to the managers of all four clubs and their star players.

Meanwhile, a wide variety of Barclays initiated activities took place outside of the tournament, including client, school, hospital and charity visits with the Barclays Premier League trophy and Barclays Ambassador for the event, former England footballer Ian Wright.

We saw the best of the Premier League in the commitment of Arsenal, Everton and Stoke City. I know they were blown away by the reception that they received from fans and the people of the Lion City. Singapore has helped us put on our best ever Barclays Asia Trophy and given us every reason to seriously consider returning in the near future.
Richard Scudamore, Premier League Executive Chairman

There was also a knowledge transfer workshop with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which saw the Barclays Premier League and its clubs share their business expertise with football power brokers from 17 AFC nations.

In addition, over 100 local coaches and referees took part in three Phase 1 Premier Skills courses with the Premier League and their partners - the British Council, FAS, SportsSG and the AFC. These programmes, delivered by Premier League coaches and referees, have been aimed at helping develop the grassroots of the game in Singapore.

The Premier League has committed to continue this work, donating S$150,000 to the Football Association of Singapore. The money will go to ensuring that the football legacy exists beyond the Barclays Asia Trophy and continues to deliver on the Mutual Cooperation Agreement the Premier League signed with the AFC last year.

Andrew Jones, Co-CEO, Barclays Asia Pacific, says: “What a fantastic week culminating in an unforgettable client and colleague experience, and record attendance at the stadium. I am always proud to represent the organisation but I felt particularly privileged handing over the trophy knowing what the Barclays team has achieved in bringing the event to Singapore for the first time.”

“This past week in Singapore highlights what makes the Barclays Asia Trophy and the Premier League so special; excellent football, played competitively in a full and vibrant stadium,” says Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore.

“We saw the best of the Premier League in the commitment of Arsenal, Everton and Stoke City. I know they were blown away by the reception that they received from fans and the people of the Lion City. Singapore has helped us put on our best ever Barclays Asia Trophy and given us every reason to seriously consider returning in the near future.”
